Will Hutchens is a writer, editor, traveller, adventurer, storyteller, farmer, analyst, non-conformist, student, musician, linguist, husband and father, all pressed together into the same body. Originally from Dayton, Washington, he came to Portland in 2008 to get his master’s degree in international management at Portland State University.
Intrigued by Portland’s unique café scene, he started Caffeinated PDX, a blog dedicated primarily to coffee in and around the city. While conducting his “research,” Will has visited nearly 150 cafés in the metro area, talking to baristas, roasters, café owners, customers and anyone else who cares about coffee and is willing to chat. You can often find him sitting at a back table in Portland’s finer cafés, seeking out interesting espressos and working on his next story.
Will served as a sensory judge at the 2012 and 2013 Northwest Regional Barista Championships, as well as at the 2012 United States Barista Championship. His article about Happy Cup, a roaster in Portland that supports people with developmental disabilities, was published in the June/July 2012 issue of Barista Magazine.
Will is currently working on a book about specialty coffee, seen through Portland’s unique perspective. It should be published in early 2014.
